Resuming the Fireplace Build: Framing, Hidden Doors, and "Fireplace Math"

It has been three long months since I ripped out what I call the "monstrosity" that was my old fireplace wall. Life, as it often does, simply got in the way with summer projects and outdoor content, leaving this room tented off for a quarter of a year. I know my family—and certainly I—am tired of the enclosure and the wasted space. But I am finally back, and it’s time to tackle the framing and the hidden door.
The Secret Door Strategy
One of the most exciting parts of this build is the hidden panel door. This isn’t a standard door; it’s a flat panel that will eventually be disguised behind picture box molding. I’ve decided to use magnets for the closure, but the real trick is the floor clearance. To truly hide it, the door cannot be flush with the ground like a regular door, or the trim won't align. I’ve had to create a threshold to step over, allowing the trim to wrap around the bottom and keep the "secret" intact.
Tackling the Framing (and the Warped Wood)

Before I could get the door wall set, I had to even out the existing structure. I used some 1-inch thick scrap wood to pad out the framing because the previous concrete blocking left an uneven hang. I tacked these in with a finish nailer before coming back with the "big guns"—the framing nailer—to ensure everything was sturdy.
Of course, no project goes perfectly. Even though my lumber had been stored flat in a controlled environment, several pieces had warped and bowed significantly. To combat this, I’ve had to get creative: cutting around the warped sections to make smaller pieces, or using heavy weights and a little moisture to try to flatten them back out.
Tools and Safety

When things get intense, I always prioritize safety. I never start the saw without my Aleah Safety Glasses, which are tactical grade to keep my eyes protected while looking cute.
For the joinery, I’ve been using a combination of pocket holes and framing nails. I love using my Athena Cordless Power Drill for this. While I use a Kreg jig for the pocket holes, I still rely on nails for the main structure because, as the experts say, nails are often stronger in these builds; screws can strip or break, while nails have the flexibility to bend.
The Mental Battle and "Fireplace Math"
I’ll be honest: getting started again was a mental battle. Between the Florida rainy season turning the sky gloomy and the sheer scale of the job, motivation was hard to find. But I’ve learned that if you just take that first step and chisel away a little each day, you’ll eventually get there.
Once I got moving, I had to do some serious "fireplace math". My total workspace is 102.25 inches. To ensure the 34-inch fireplace insert stays perfectly centered, I decided to build the front wall in three separate sections. This prevents one side panel from being slightly larger than the other due to small measurement errors.
Seeing the Vision

After chiseling out some old thin-set mortar to get the base flush and dry-fitting the sections, I finally got to slide the insert into place. Seeing that unit sitting in the new frame made all the chaos of the last few months worth it. We aren't finished yet, but the vision is finally coming to life.
