Building My Dream Fireplace: Framing, Secret Doors, and DIY Magic

Remember that giant monstrosity of an ugly built-in entertainment center that used to dominate my living space? Well, it is officially a thing of the past!. The demo is done, the room is sealed up like a sci-fi movie, and I am finally starting the rebuilding process with a clean slate and a fresh vision. This fireplace transformation is one of my most ambitious projects yet, and I’m so excited to take you along for day one of the build.

The Vision: More Than Just a Fireplace

My plan for this wall isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about functionality and a little bit of mystery. I’m framing the front in two separate sections, which is a trick I used on my last build. Doing it this way makes the structure much easier to manage by myself and adds extra "beefiness" where the fireplace mantle will eventually sit.

The layout includes a dedicated box for an electric fireplace insert—the same model I’ve used before but with even more features—and a specific area for a built-in TV. To make sure the TV is secure, I’ve decided to use a sheet of plywood for the mount area instead of struggling to find studs through drywall later. I’m also pre-framing spots for light fixtures to ensure everything has a sturdy mounting point.

The Secret Door and the Electrical Dilemma

The most exciting (and intimidating) part of this build is the secret door I’m framing on the left side of the fireplace. While the right side is traditional framing, the left side has to accommodate a hidden entrance, which means the dimensions have to be spot on.

Of course, in DIY project is without its "weird surprises". I ran into a major roadblock with an existing electrical box that sits right where the secret door needs to go. I’ve spent a lot of time staring at it, trying to decide if I should move it myself using an oscillating tool or call in a professional. For now, I’ve disconnected the power and capped the wires to keep things safe while I focus on the structure. Getting to Work: Lumber and Safety

For the framing, I’m using 2x3 lumber instead of the 2x6s that were there before.  I recommend building the framing in sections rather than one giant piece. For this project, I built the bottom pieces first and then created a top section to slide in, making the heavy lifting much more manageable for one person.

5. What safety gear is essential for a project like this? 

At a minimum, you should always wear safety glasses that are ANSI Z87.1+ certified to protect your eyes from debris when cutting or using a nail gun. Using gloves can also protect your hands from splinters when handling lumber.
